31/03/2025 Pendant un demi-siècle, la recherche scientifique a produit des millions d’études. Trop souvent, elles s’accumulent sans être relues, vérifiées ou répliquées. L’intelligence artificielle offre désormais une solution inédite : relire, croiser et auditer l’ensemble du corpus scientifique pour identifier les biais, les impasses et les hypothèses erronées. Depuis vingt ans, la crise de reproductibilité hante la science. En 2012, Amgen révélait n’avoir pu reproduire que 6 des 53 études majeures qu’elle avait sélectionnées en oncologie. En psychologie, plus de 60 % des expériences ne tiennent pas face à une vérification indépendante. Dans de nombreux domaines, la dynamique de publication a pris le pas sur l’exigence de vérification. Le problème est structurel. Les incitations économiques, la pression des revues, les financements orientés vers les “sujets à résultats” ont généré une accumulation massive de données parfois douteuses. Certaines hypothèses centrales, comme celle de la protéine bêta-amyloïde dans Alzheimer, ont orienté pendant des décennies des milliards d’euros de recherche, sans validation définitive. L’audit global devient possible Les grands modèles de langage (LLM) changent l’échelle du possible. Capables d’ingérer des milliers d’articles scientifiques, ils peuvent : croiser des papiers qui ne se citent pas entre eux ; détecter les corrélations faibles ou les erreurs statistiques ; repérer les domaines négligés par la recherche ; évaluer la robustesse d’un corpus sans biais cognitifs. Le résultat : une relecture globale, exhaustive, neutre. En quelques heures, un modèle peut identifier des incohérences que des chercheurs isolés mettraient des années à repérer. L’audit devient automatique, systématique. Vers une recherche pilotée par l’IA Au-delà de l’analyse, certains laboratoires commencent à intégrer l’IA dans le processus de création scientifique lui-même. Des plateformes comme Benchling ou Emerald Cloud Lab permettent de transformer les hypothèses générées par IA en expériences concrètes, menées dans des laboratoires automatisés. L’enchaînement devient mécanique : l’IA lit la littérature, identifie une faille ou un manque, propose un protocole, l’envoie à un robot, récupère les résultats, les analyse, et recommence. La recherche devient continue, sans pause, sans fatigue, sans intuition, mais avec rigueur. La fin de l’erreur… ou de la découverte ? Là réside la limite. Une part essentielle de la recherche tient à l’erreur, au hasard, à l’accident. La pénicilline, le micro-ondes ou le Viagra sont nés de déviations imprévues. L’IA, conçue pour réduire les écarts, pourrait tarir cette source d’innovation. Certaines équipes explorent déjà des mécanismes pour introduire artificiellement du “bruit” dans les modèles. Objectif : simuler la sérendipité, provoquer l’accident constructif. Mais peut-on programmer l’inattendu ? Des effets concrets à court terme L’impact sera considérable dans de nombreux secteurs : En pharmacie, des molécules abandonnées pourront être redécouvertes ou repositionnées. En médecine, les données de santé personnelle croisées avec la littérature permettront d’identifier des traitements ciblés. Dans les laboratoires publics, la productivité scientifique sera démultipliée, sous réserve d’un accès maîtrisé aux outils. Les bases de données propriétaires deviendront stratégiques. Dans ce nouveau régime, le modèle compte moins que les données qu’il peut explorer. Les hôpitaux, les États, les universités deviendront détenteurs de gisements de savoir à revaloriser.
