Please try again Article content Marin Patenaude, Sex and Dying Where: Streaming, various platforms From the darkly sinuous folk-pop leanings of her recordings, Marin Patenaude seems an unlikely candidate to cover Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that’s exactly what the singer/songwriter from Horsefly, B.C., does on her latest album, Sex and Dying. The California funk-punk outfit’s early albums Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik “were formative for me as a teenager,” she tells Postmedia. “I was a pretty hardcore punk rocker back in the day.” Now Vancouver-based, Patenaude and her band, including guitarist Cole Schmidt, strip the Peppers’ 1989 track Taste the Pain down to its sorrowful roots. Originally a tribute to the band’s guitarist Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose, the song fits in with the overall sense of mortality that underlies the new record. Patenaude’s own Fentanyl Waltz in particular sums up the mood. “I’ve lost five people very close to me, including the daughter of one of my best friends,” Patenaude said. “It seems like before the start of the pandemic we were talking about the fentanyl crisis a lot more than we are now.” With the song, she says, she was thinking about what her friend went through, and also what she may have put her own mother through. “I mean, I’ve been reckless and wild,” she says. Patenaude’s previous and just as accomplished album, 2020’s Sight Unseen, got lost in the pandemic shuffle. Hopefully Sex and Dying, streaming as of Jan. 11, will reach the wider audience it deserves. Brown /jpg Doug and the Slugs and Me When: Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. Where: CBC (streaming on CBC Gem) Premiering at DOXA last year, the doc about beloved Vancouver pop band Doug and the Slugs comes to small screens this month. Directed by local filmmaker Teresa Alfeld, the film covers not only the career of the group, with appearances by such Canadian music industry luminaries as Sam Feldman, Denise Donlon, Ron Sexsmith and Steven Page, as well as Sir Bob Geldof, but also Alfeld’s relationships with the family of lead singer Doug Bennett. “It turned into a POV story, a point-of-view story where I eventually had to acknowledge my connection to the band and my connection to Doug Bennett was actually critical in how I could uncover and tell the story,” Alfield told Postmedia’s Dana Gee last year. She was also given access to 39 journals that the vocalist and songwriter kept between 1980-1989. Bennett passed away in 2005 at age 52. Interwoven with the national music of Portugal known as fado, which means “fate,” the show was a hit of the Victoria Fringe in 2018, and enjoyed a run at the Firehall in 2019. The remount features the original cast, including Victoria’s Sara Marreiros playing the ghost of Amália Rodrigues, the Queen of Fado. Local indie-pop band Twin River, featuring Courtney Ewan on vocals and Andy Bishop on guitar, play China Cloud Jan. 12. Fans of Ewan’s distinctive voice and Bishop’s chiming guitars will be glad to have them back, especially on the assured opening track, I’m Alright, and the sneakily hook of Other Side.
