YouTube rolls out AI-powered ‘custom instrumentals’ feature

Apr 9, 2025

YouTube rolls out AI-powered ‘custom instrumentals’ feature Music Ally NEXT 2025: Early Bird tickets on sale now – at a special discounted rate for a limited time! A one-day event in central London on Monday 17 June focused on the intersection of technology and the music business. Click or tap here to find out more and secure your space. Anyone who makes money from licensing background music to YouTubers, or claiming via Content ID the tracks they use, will be following YouTube’s latest feature closely. It’s called ‘custom instrumentals’ and is a new option in the ‘Creator Music’ beta that lives within YouTube’s dashboard for creators. “We’re gradually rolling out a feature that allows you to create custom instrumentals for your videos with the help of AI,” explained YouTube in a video on its Creator Insider channel . The feature uses a text-prompts system for people to describe the music they’d like to create, specifying instruments, mood and the type of video the music will soundtrack. “These are free for you to use, so you don’t need to worry about copyright claims,” added YouTube’s presenter. This is exactly the pitch that has historically been used by companies like Epidemic Sound who have built sizeable businesses from licensing production music to YouTubers and other social-media creators. YouTube’s new feature may be seen as a threat to their growth, although its impact on commercial labels’ Content ID revenues remains to be seen as it rolls out. Related Stories
