Share this news: Houzz’s 2025 Kitchen Trends Survey reveals that 35% of homeowners expand kitchen size during renovations, often by taking space from dining rooms. Countertops are the most commonly upgraded feature. Major remodel costs rose to $60,000, with 86% hiring professionals for the job. Phoenix, United States, March 29, 2025 /PressCable/ -- The website, Houzz, is an online platform focused on home design and remodeling. The site was launched in 2009 by Adi Tatarko and her husband Alon Cohen, when the couple envisioned an online platform that could offer homeowners design inspiration, connect them with renovation professionals, and provide tools for managing home remodeling projects. Today, Houzz boasts over 70 million consumer users, plus over 3 million professional users from the design and construction industries. Every year, Houzz conducts a Kitchen Trends survey. This year the company surveyed 1,620 homeowners in the U.S. about their recent or planned kitchen renovation projects. Among the key learnings of the Houzz 2025 survey was the fact that homeowners who conduct kitchen remodels tend to increase the size of their kitchens. According to the report, “More than a third of homeowners (35%) increase the footprint of their kitchen during a renovation, and many of those (29%) choose to steal space from a dining room to enlarge kitchen space.” Smaller percentages of homeowners steal space from living rooms (12%), hallways (10%) or closets (7%), while nearly one in five (18%) builds a home addition in order to expand the kitchen. About half (53%) of renovated kitchens are 200 square feet or larger; one in three (34%) measures 100 to 199 square feet; and one in eight (13%) is smaller than 100 square feet. Houzz found that the median spend on major kitchen remodels (i.e., where all cabinets and appliances are replaced) increased about 10% year over year, to $60,000. High-end major remodels (defined as the 90th percentile of spending) cost about three times as much. The survey also found that more than four-fifths of homeowners (86%) hired a professional - typically a general contractor - to head up the project. Houzz determined that countertops were the number-one feature upgraded during kitchen renovation, as nine out of ten (91%) kitchen remodelers reported replacing them. Backsplashes (85%), cabinets (85%), sinks (84%) and faucets (81%) were targeted for replacement by more than four out of five remodelers. One person who is not at all surprised by the finding that custom wood countertops are the kitchen feature most often upgraded during kitchen remodels is Kathleen Grodsky, CEO of the online store Butcher Block Co., who sells two of the most popular wood-countertop brands across the U.S. - John Boos and BBCO. According to Ms. Grodsky, “There’s no better way to refresh and rejuvenate a kitchen than by upgrading to butcher block or wood-plank countertops. Not only are they affordable, durable and versatile, they add natural warmth to kitchens, plus they’re eco-friendly, since wood is a renewable resource.” ABOUT BUTCHER BLOCK CO. - Since 2007, BBCo. - the experts in all things butcher block - has been selling directly to homeowners, interior designers, builders and contractors, butcher-block and plank-style countertops in 16 different species of wood, plus a wide array of butcher-block islands, tables, carts and cutting boards.
