Which utility companies are most prepared to adopt and respond to AI? Our AI Readiness Index benchmarks the world’s largest utilities across AI innovation and execution.
AI investments are poised to transform the utility sector. By 2032, it’s expected that utilities will see an additional $8.6B in value by implementing genAI tools — not to mention the broader opportunity for utilities to support the energy demands of increasingly advanced models.
From predictive maintenance and grid optimization to smart metering and customer service chatbots, AI solutions are already helping utility companies enhance operational efficiency, improve reliability, and deliver better customer experiences.
To determine which utility companies are most prepared for the shift, CB Insights has launched the Utility AI Readiness Index.
We looked at the largest 50 global utility companies by market cap and ranked the top 25 based on how prepared they are to adapt to a rapidly evolving AI landscape. Our analysis scores them in 2 key areas:
- Innovation: The innovation score measures a utility company’s track record of developing or acquiring novel AI capabilities. This score is based on CB Insights data including patents, acquisitions, and deal-making activity.
- Execution: The execution score measures a utility company’s ability to bring AI-powered products and services onto the grid as well as deploy AI internally across business and back-office functions. This score is based on CB Insights data including business relationships, product launch media mentions, and earnings transcripts.
Below, we present the 25 utility companies most prepared to take advantage of the AI boom.
