Monkey Wanted: Help SmarTots Create its New Mascot

SmarTots publishes children's mobile games (iOS, Android) that draw children's attention with educational content. Focusing on creativity (art, music) and language, our goal is for kids to have fun and for parents to feel happy about their children's screen time. We primarily target children from 0-7 years old and their parents.

SmarTots needs a mascot. A monkey mascot. We need a fully dynamic character that can potentially be animated, put in a game, made into a plush toy, etc. This character is much more than a simple logo, we want a design that has the potential to become iconic. When we have a character settled, we may also commission a company logo featuring it, but coming up with a logo is a secondary goal. Main Requirement: The monkey must be UNIQUE and MEMORABLE We need a monkey that kids can instantly remember after seeing and articulate (especially to their parents!) It's not enough for kids to say "Oh, that's a monkey," we need to elicit a reaction more like "That monkey is awesome/funny/cool/fun!" He needs to be original enough to stand out. So being “sticky” is priority number one, but reflecting our company’s identity and values is ESSENTIAL. For that, children should find the monkey: -Fun -Clever -Friendly If they feel like they want to take him home with them, we’ll call that a win. Outside-the-box thinking is cool, but not so far out of it that kids don’t know they’re looking at a monkey. I believe that there’s a sweet spot where our monkey can be unique and memorable without being abstract to the point of misinterpretation. That said, we'd rather see too crazy than too tame. Feel free to get creative with body type, facial expression, gestures, accessories and colors, I’m looking forward to being surprised by imagination and artistic flair.

Because we're a company that makes apps, we think that vector graphics are the best idea. We want it simple enough to replicate (i.e. animate, turn into a logo, draw in different positions, costumes, locations, etc.) but still unique and impactful. From this project, we want to gain not just a simple graphic, but a character that we can fill with personality and identity. If successful, the design we choose will become an important part of the SmarTots image.
