Use Social Media & AI for Advice New Delhi, 18 March: A recent survey conducted by healthcare provider Pristyn Care has uncovered critical gaps in women’s reproductive health awareness in India. The study, conducted among more than 9,100 women across urban and rural regions, reveals a concerning trend—many women normalize gynaecological health issues and seek information from unverified sources, leading to potential long-term health risks. The findings show that 57% of women ignore gynaecological health concerns, assuming them to be a routine part of life, while 69% cite lack of family discussion and exposure as key reasons for poor reproductive health knowledge. Despite the growing availability of digital tools, 62% of women have never used apps or online resources to track their menstrual cycles. The study also revealed that 68% of women turn to social media and AI tools for information on periods, PCOS, and menopause, but 78% report feeling confused or misinformed due to unreliable sources. Additionally, 49% either self-medicate or ignore painful periods, risking serious conditions like endometriosis and fibroids. 40% of women over the age of 50 are unaware of menstrual phases, highlighting a significant gap in reproductive health education. Commenting on the findings, Dr. Garima Sawhney, Senior Gynaecologist and Co-Founder, Pristyn Care, said, “This survey highlights a worrying reality—women continue to endure menstrual pain and other gynaecological issues without seeking medical intervention. Menstrual health is not just about hygiene; it’s an essential part of a woman’s overall well-being. Open discussions and better access to credible healthcare professionals are crucial in bridging this gap. It’s alarming that so many women rely on social media for critical health concerns. If physical distance poses as a barrier, virtual consultations can play a pivotal role in reducing this dependency. It’s crucial to seek professional guidance rather than self-diagnosing or relying on social media, as misinformation can lead to misdiagnosis and complications. If help is to be sought online, better to seek it from doctors themselves. The study also highlights the urgent need for proactive healthcare initiatives and greater awareness to ensure that women receive accurate and timely medical guidance.” The survey underscores the need for increased awareness and consulting verified medical professionals without delay. As misinformation continues to spread, healthcare providers and educators must work together to deliver reliable, stigma-free reproductive health information.
